Edinburgh-based artists Susie Wilson and Gen Harrison have a longstanding connection with printmaking and a shared love of analogue working. Both enjoy the playfulness and experimentation this brings. Susie’s practice brings her background in fine art printmaking into book forms and Gen’s practice has strong foundations in the medium of Letterpress.
‘Press Play’ takes a light-hearted look at the cassette player, with a nostalgic nod to everything that comes with it, taping off the radio, favourite tracks to share, friendship, documenting a point in time, pencils and tangled tapes.
Susie and Gen draw inspiration from the art movements of Dada and Fluxus, taking particular interest in how these movements worked collaboratively, making work in response to instructions and one another. This circular way of working is central to their teaching and creative practice. It brings ways of getting started and encourages the development of ideas through making. Consider the actions... Rewind, Record, Play, Pause, Fast Forward, Stop, Eject.
They have used this model to produce an interactive exhibition in the spirit of the cassette era. The exhibition will evolve through audience participation. People play will enhance the recording.
PRIVATE VIEW: Friday 18 Oct, 6-8pm.
